Bonus Baby

I have always enjoyed the friendships of women. I like the way they think, roll with the punches in life, and are great at keeping in touch with one another even when their lives change. I have been particularly surprised by joy when one of them in her forties calls to say, “I’m having another baby!” Just when they have put their youngest in middle school, given away the crib, and forgotten all about midnight feedings and baby shots. My reply is always one that catches them by surprise. “The Lord has chosen you to have a bonus baby!” That’s the baby no one expected, the baby everyone gets to smother with kisses, and you wonder when it is all said and done how you ever thought your family was complete without the added “bonus.”

We were told that there was a little three-year-old girl with problems similar to the ones Katy has who was in foster care and needed a home. She needs a hematologist, caring physician, and transfusions once a month. She needs a family with an understanding of ongoing medical issues. We thought our plate was full. We thought we were too old. We thought it was time to find a green pasture and stay there. I guess you might say we were living our own agenda. Then by total surprise we were given a little girl named Qavah (a Hebrew word for hope and patience). Paul and I will be traveling soon to pick her up. We look at her bedroom every night and say a prayer for her. By the time she was three years old she had been in four hospitals. But in a couple of weeks she will be in the home the Lord prepared for her from before time began. We know she will bring us just as much joy as our other children have because children are a gift from the Lord. We love the fact that He has given us another one through adoption. It is His picture of His love for us, in that while we were lost and without hope, He paid a price for us, called us by name, and welcomed us home into His family for all eternity.

  2. Bob, Amy, Emily, Meredith and Abby Says:

Meredith said last night at bedtime, “When are the Campbells getting Qavah?” I told her in the next few weeks, hopefully. Then she said, “I can’t wait to babysit her!” So, here we are ready, waiting and eager babysitters at your service!! :0) Looking forward to meeting that “bonus baby” soon!

    Love to you all,
    Amy (for the Collins family)

    Dawn,
The story of Qavah & how she has become a part of your family is feeding my heart & soul. God is still on His throne! He is still up to something, & His somethings are a wonder to behold. By the way, you, Paul & Katy are 3 of the somethings the Lord has put in my life, & I’m thankful for you & your family.
    In the Lamb,
    Trisha

  4. Sandy Says:

What a wonderful surprise! Congratulations and blessings to your growing family!

  5. Doris Harriff Says:

Wow, when I first saw the comment about your announcement, I thought the time frame of this might be something like Katy, something that you have had in the works since before Katy’s medical problems surfaced. I wondered, how are you going to deal with a young child, and Katy’s problems into the bargain? And now I read that little Qavah has serious medical problems, too. How are you going to do it? But the Lord, who called you, is faithful. Qavah looks like a little sweetheart! God bless you, and continue to give you His strength as you serve him with your giving heart.

  6. Doris Harriff Says:

Even though they weren’t all that old when they were born, I’m sure your in-laws saw Judy & Jackie as bonus babies! They had given up on getting a girl when that little “accident” happened.

  7. Donna Rowe Says:

Wow! Praising the Lord! We are right next door too : ) (hint-hint for when you need a babysitter)

  8. Jess Says:

Wow! Ok - I’ve been on vacation for the last two weeks - we come home on Saturday and I thought I would just ‘check-in’ and see how things were going and get my “Katy-Update” and my jaw is still on the floor! You guys are amazing! I read the post from today and then went back to yesterday….then called Josh over and made him read both of the Musings with me!! We are so happy for you guys and your bonus baby! This is amazing and huge!! Congratulations on your new little one! And since she’s older than Noah - I can still call for advice!!! Yippie!! :)

We love you guys and will be praying for you! When do you travel to get her??

    Love ya!
    Jess

    HI DAWN!!!

This is so off the subject of the page I replied to, but I just had to touch base with you. We’ve been praying for Katy in choir practice - Linda Womack provides updates - and this week Carol Taylor told me about this site. Wow! Katy sure has grown up! It was so good to “see” all of you again, as I browsed through wedding pictures and read about your family. You still look great!

Hey, I have a granddaughter now! Her name is Kyli Elizabeth and she will be 2 years old in October. Robbie and his wife Marion met while they were in the Navy (he did 4 years right out of high school). Marion is still active, though, and is actually being sent to Afghanistan on August 5. She will miss Kyli’s 2nd birthday :-(

Mark is still struggling daily with bad pain, but he has weaned himself off of all but one medication. It has been a tough time with many sleepless nights, but he is so much more clearheaded now. He’s been using a lot of herbs and vitamins in place of pain medication and, sceptical as I am about those things, they really do work.

Joey (don’t know if you ever met him) is about to be a Junior at Liberty University. He hates school, no matter where it is, but sees it as a necessary evil for his future job options. Of course, he’s changed his major many times - Criminal Justice to Psychology to Communications to, most recently, Sports Management. Any and all of these categories suit him fine - he just had to find the one he thinks he’ll enjoy the most.

I’m still in the choir, working for Terry here at the church office, trying to lose weight with Curves, love NASCAR (go Jeff Gordon!), and actually ran in two 5k races with Joey (he’s an avid runner and has in name in the paper a lot) since the fall of 2005.

I could tell you a lot more, but I’m getting long. Those are the highlights right now. Tell Paul I said hi. I doubt your boys will remember me.

    Love & Prayers,
    Debby ;-)

  11. Marcie Long Says:

How sweet that Qavah will come to your wonderful home and family soon! We are having a blast with our “bonus baby” Karina.
I’m glad to see that Katy is having some good days (and nights) too.
God bless you for caring for His children.
    Love, Marcie
